    Wonderfulsound Creative Director, Miles Copeland has chosen the best Bloomsbury shops, museums, gallery’s theatres, retailers and public spaces, and created a unique series of soundswhich bring out the character of otherwise inanimate objects and places.

    The result was the 14 soundscapes entitled See The World Through Sound (STWTS) encapsulating this inventive, unique and creative hub of London.

    STWTS 14 - British Museum Underground Station

    In 1933 the British Museum Underground Station was closed.  It’s platforms were kept in use by various Government departments but in 1989 it’s surface station was demolished and replaced.

    STWTS13 - L.Corenelissen & Son

    L.Corenelissen & Son Has Been trading in London since 1855 and as their website puts it …”Cornelissen is known throughtout the world as a specialist niche supplier of art materials from premises that 19th Century Apothecary would recognise.”

    Bloomsbury Artist Nick Pankhurst paints an oil on canvas picture

    STWTS 5 - The Lamb Public House. 

    A sound recording of The Polyphon (a type of over sized wind up music box) from The Lamb Public House.   A grade 2 listed building built circa 1729 with the original snob screens popular in the 1890’s.   Named after William Lamb who in 1577 brought clean water to the area of Holborn

    STWTS 8 - The School Of Life

    This is a place for open minded people to step back and think intelligently about why work is so unfulfilling, why it’s hard to stay calm, what one could do to change the world for the better. Events range from How To Spend Time Alone to DIY Opera In A Day to How To Have Better Conversations.

    STWTS 9 -  London Review Bookshop

    This book shop has been situated in Bloomsbury since 2003 and has developed into a distinctive and innovative shop supplying choice Books, DVD’s, Audio and a very nice cake too.  Here is the sound of a bookshop

    STWTS 1 - Wonderfulsound.

    Our head office is based in Bloomsbury which is how we were asked to partake in this festival. Listen card’s first release is an audio postcard. A 5 minute sonic adventure through London. Look out for it at all forward thinking shops including Rough Trade East, Tate modern, The Design Museum and Bloomsbury’s very own British Museum to name a few.

    STWTS 2 - 4th Floor Hairdressing. 

    Situated on the top two floors overlooking clerkenwell the 4th floor has been hidden away on the fringes of Bloomsbury for 2 decades. With it’s own brand of hair products and a talented group of hair stylists all nurtured by Richard Stepney, it is a unique and peaceful space.

    STWTS 3 - The Espresso Room. 

    Possibly one of the smallest shops in Bloomsbury and maybe one of the most successful. This bustling coffee bar stands tall amongst London’s generation of Barista’s making some of the finest cups of coffee in London.

    STWTS 6 - The Peoples Supermarket.

    Set up by Arthur Potts Dawson, this co-operative venture has been set up as an alternative to the big Supermarkets. All the staff are volunteers which also means they co own the business and get a discount off their shopping bill. It’s a business about the people for the people by the people.

    STWTS 7 - Euterpe

    Hidden away in one of London’s most historic graveyards, is the statue of Euterpe, one of the 9 muses of Apollo.  In Greek mysology she was the muse of Instrumental music and is said to have invented the Double Flute.

    STWTS 7 - Shawn Lee Trans Yank Studios.

    Shawn Lee is multi instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, percussionist. Born in Kansas he has travelled the world writing and playing on most genres of the musical spectrum. Now based in the cultural hub of Bloomsbury here is a a piece of music from him called Great Russell Street.

    STWTS 11 - The Royal Acadamy Of Dramatic Art

    RADA was established in 1904 offering training for actors, directors, designers and technicians. Keeping the traditions strong and developing along with the ever changing world of technology, the Academy is a global ambassador for the traditions of theatrical knowledge.

    STWTS 12 - James Smith & Sons - The Umbrella Shop.  The business in umbrellas has always thrived - perhaps because of the English weather. Apart from being the leading umbrella company for 170 years and the first name in sticks and canes, the shop on New Oxford Street is a legend in itself. It is a perfect example of Victorian shop front design and has remained virtually unaltered in 140 years.

    STWTS 4 - C.Bailey & Sons Horse & Motor Contractors.

    Stand in this alley at Barbon Close play this sound and try and imagine the sound of Horse Drawn London. Now we are deafened by the motorcar and recording sounds in this city is constantly interrupted by the roaring fire engine or the 50 cc moped. Horses and their carriages were the sound designers menance back in the early 20th Century.
